What is a Facial Photo-Rejuvenation?

facial_photo_2.jpgFacial Photo-Rejuvenation is a series of full face, gentle pulsed light treatments intended to improve the appearance of fine lines, sun damage and aged skin, as well as reduce facial redness and flushing. Facial Photo-Rejuvenation treatments were developed to improve the visible appearance of the skin with little or no down time resulting in a more youthful-appearing skin. Some of the most gratified patients are those who have shown the ravages of sun and time on the face. This technology can also be used to rejuvenate the neck, the chest, the arms and the hands.

What conditions can Facial Photo-Rejuvenation treat?

Imperfections from sun damage and photo-aging - Irregular pigmentation, dull complexions and other facial abnormalities can detract from your well-being and appearance, no matter how healthy and young you feel. IPL technology improves both the superficial and deeper skin layers and rejuvenates the skin while at the same time delivering beneficial thermal energy to deep tissue. After a series of treatments, you can see a significant reduction of unwanted pigmentation and the appearance of smoother, revitalized skin. The same treatment can be used effectively on the neck, the chest, and the hands.

Benign vascular lesions: broken veins and capillaries - The face has an extensive network of vein and tiny blood vessels called capillaries. These unsightly blemishes can be part of rosacea. Rosacea is a skin aliment that leaves people red-faced from dilated blood vessels and chronic flushing. It can also cause pimples and/or blisters on the nose and cheeks. For women and men, IPL can successfully treat dilated blood vessels and redness without injuring the surrounding healthy skin.

What are the benefits of Facial Photo-Rejuvenation?

Imagine a more youthful looking you... Both the pleasures and stresses of life, along with the simple passage of time, tend to cause our skin to appear older. The signs of aging and sun-damage are typically most visible on a person‘s face. Facial Photo-Rejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that corrects damaged skin with little or no down time.

While numerous treatments, from simple creams to major surgeries exist to improve various facial flaws, dermatologists have always sought dramatic improvement with low risk and no "downtime." Additionally, many conventional treatment options can only address one condition at a time, while they entail a prolonged recovery time, considerable pain, and potential side effects.

Facial Photo-Rejuvenation can simultaneously treat a wide range of facial concerns safely and effectively, such as broken capillaries, skin discoloration, age spots, freckles, mottled pigmentation and the symptom of rosacea.

How does the treatment work?

facial_photo_3.jpgAn intense light is emitted in a series of gentle pulses over the entire face at intervals of approximately three weeks for a series of five treatments. This special device, which is different than laser, emits light energy over many wavelengths allowing the light to penetrate to all the levels of the skin where abnormally dilated vessels and irregular pigmentation can be found. In addition, this energy stimulates collagen regeneration improving firmness of the skin. Facial Photo-Rejuvenation treatments also help patients who suffer from photo-aging of the skin, pigmentation from sun exposure (Age Spots), irregularities of skin texture, improve acne scars, reduce large pores and help reduce fine lines, especially around the eyes and mouth.

What is the role of Facial Photo-Rejuvenation in the treatment of Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common chronic condition of the face characterized by redness, dilated blood vessels and unsightly pustules and swelling. Blushing is its most devastating characteristic. Facial Photo-Rejuvenation treats these signs and symptoms in a series of visits. The treatments are so effective, that some rosacea patients are able to stop taking antibiotic pills and creams they had been using for years.

Will Facial Photo-Rejuvenation treatments help my acne scars?

Yes, certain more shallow scars including fine lines will be improved, but ice pick type acne scarring and deep scars will not be helped. Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing may be indicated here. If the scars are milder and do not respond to Facial Photo-Rejuvenation alone then we often add Glycolic Acid Rejuvenation to the treatment schedule.

How do other treatments compare to Photo-Rejuvenation?

While there are lasers that treat red spots, other lasers that treat browns, and others yet that are used for resurfacing facial skin, no technology provides the long-term improvement of complexion and texture of the Facial Photo-Rejuvenation.

Are there any side effects?

Yes. Most side effects are mild and of short duration. These can consist of short-term discomfort during the actual treatment, mild redness immediately following treatment, usually lasting less than 24 hours but on rare occasions it may last up to three days. Although uncommon, bruising and crusting is possible but usually clears very quickly. Patients with excessive sun damage in their lifetime are more at risk for mild swelling . Most patients find this an acceptable risk if they can improve their skin texture and tone. Rarely, changes in pigmentation have been noted but fortunately these are highly treatable. Swelling of the face for 2-3 days occasionally occurs and again is more common in severely sun-damaged skin due to reduced quality of connective tissue around the blood vessels.

How long does each treatment last?

facial_photo_1.jpgEach treatment lasts approximately thirty minutes to one hour. During this time, any additional questions will be answered. Prior to your appointment, all make-up or creams must be removed. Men will be asked to shave on the day of treatment, prior to their arrival at the office. A lotion is usually applied to the area to be treated, and you may be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. The smooth glass surface of the IPL hand-piece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied. You may feel a slight sting, like the snapping of a small rubber band. After the procedure you may be asked to ice the area, and will be given any additional post treatment instructions as necessary.
